Hi Jim,
I really don't have much to add to most of the labels my son put on the
photos.
There is a photo of two sailors in their white uniforms; the one on the
right is Caniel Reiley. the other man is my father, Lyle Schlup (on your
left). You might want to identify him.
There is also a piece of paper with two recipes on it for homemade
moonshine. That was given to my father on board. I find it interesting
that no one needed to tell him how to build the still.
As far as stories about my father, he just never said much about the
war. I still have the chain his dog tags were on, but he tossed the
actual tags.
For me personally, my uncle tells the story about my mom being in the
hospital and recovering from the ether just after I was born. The nurse
walked in and asked what the baby's name was going to be. My mom thought
someone asked her where her husband was going for training. anyway, she
was a bit groggy and said "Virginia." So I was more or less named after
the Navy yard in Virginia. My mother said that wasn't true, but my uncle
says that he wasn't under the effect of ether and it was so true.
Just as a side note, I still have my father's blue wool uniform, two
wool USN blankets and a hat from the Canadian Navy that my dad traded
his for. Of course a pillow cover from Hawaii and his photo album.
My mother also saved about 60 newspapers from the war and I have those.
I have one from my birth date, from December 7, 1942 and D-day along
with VE Day and VJ Day.
I am continually fascinated by documentaries of WWII and many of the
movies. The movie "They were Expendable," is even sadder after I saw the
movie "The Great Raid" and the documentary about the rescue.
In closing, I have been pleased to be a small part of the the "Mighty Y'
and the effort to keep the memory.
